In many ways, the story of Bar Pinotxo mirrors the story of Barcelona in the 20th cnetury. The Spanish Civil War. Hunger. Fear. Desperation. A young woman walks from Andalusia to Barcelona in hopes of employment. She sells whatever she can in front of La Boqueria, the city’s most important market. Later she starts cooking for the workers and merchants of the market. They love what she cooks and ask her to cook for them full time. A simple kitchen and counter appear.

“Bar Pinotxo: God is in the Garbanzos”, by Portland author Robin Willis with introductions by John Gorham and Carme Ruscalleda, is a joyful and often poignant celebration of the history, stories and recipes from the 17-stool chiringuito in the most famous mercado in the world. 165 pages.
