A true farmstead beer, L'Amalthee (the Malted) is made organically by a native Blegian living in France at the foot of the Pyrenees Mountains. Brewer Pierre Lebbe's primary occupation is that of cheesemaker, and for this he keeps a herd of about 120 goats who freely roam the property while also providing all the manure needed to grow the barley for the beer. He makes the beer in an outbuilding in two small stainless tanks, hand-filling the bottles himself. A big off-white head sits atop a hazy rich amber-colored brew; aromas and flavors suggest citrus, honey, herbs, hops, chocolate and nuts. Light and refreshing, pleasantly malty, and perfect for summer.
