Best known as a blending grape for the world famous wines of Chateauneuf de Pape, Picpoul comes in many colors: dark red grapes, pale white grapes, and the elusive, in-between ‘gris’ variety. Well, we can now add orange to that list, courtesy of Portland’s own Flatbrim Wines. Utilizing whole-cluster Picpoul Blanc grown in well-drained granite soils, winemakers Ian and Becky Atkins treat the grapes to daily foot-trodding and 2 weeks of skin contact before pressing off directly into neutral French oak barrels. The resulting ‘orange wine’ is redolant with aromas of citrus, coconut and spice, with a well-structured, faintly creamy palate of pineapple and orange, while a low ABV (10%!) and balanced acidity bring it all home. Absolutely delicious.
